Meet Our Classroom Pet Fergus
Our class is so fortunate to have a class pet this year! His name is Fergus and he is a 2 year old bearded dragon. Fergus lives in a large aquarium in our classroom. He eats a small amount of crickets but mostly he eats fruits (his favorite is blueberries) and veggies (his favorite is kale). You will get a permission slip reguarding Fergus with more information, this permission slip is required if your student would like to interact with him on ANY level. I will spend a great deal of time discussing with students about safe handling procedures of Fergus (basically they need ot wask thier hands after touching him). Students will not be handling Fergus unless supervised by me and generally then it is only to "pet" him while I hold him.
Fergus is a wonderful opportunity to learn about animals, habitats, caring for others, the inter connectedness of the enviornment to plants, animals and humans, nutrition and honestly SO much more. Fergus does on occasion (if students have earned it) walk around on the floor of the classroom. The students will not be picking him up or touching him during this time. If you have any questions feel free to e mail. No students is ever FORCED to interact with Fergus. If reptiles are not your thing I totally get it, but it is a good lesson in coexisiting. I hope your student will enjoy the experience as much as I have and my past students have.
